MAMMA Missing In Action (2023)
MAMMA Missing in Action is a psychedelic depiction of a woman being devoured by her smoking habit.
In my surroundings, I noticed many people had picked up the unhealthy habit of smoking. Stemming from a desire to inspire addicted people to kick the habit, I thought up Mamma Missing in Action.
The smoke rising from the cigarette is deposited into an anglerfish-like demon. The anglerfish's lure is a purple hyacinth, a flower that adds a pop of colour to meadows in Western Europe from March to May. Not only is it a welcome sight, but it also attracts a lot of insects.
Various motives embellish the subject. The light-emitting skulls represent the increased risk to develop cardiovascular disease and lung cancer. The purple hyacinths represent the sorrow often resulting from the habit experienced by the subject and loved ones.
